![]() It was this characteristic that made it NASA’s choice as a research vehicle. It had no angle-of-attack restrictions at normal center-of-gravity positions. The F-18 was an exceptionally fine high angle-of-attack aircraft in its production form. The aircraft NASA selected for a large part of this flight research was a McDonnell Douglas F-18, which became known as the F-18 HARV after it was rebuilt and modified for HATP. To this end, project personnel determined that full-scale flight research was essential to address the inherent shortcomings of subscale model testing in wind tunnels and CFD. The program has placed particular emphasis on the areas of aerodynamics, propulsion, control law research, and handling qualities. The primary objectives of HATP were to provide flight-validated aircraft design tools and to improve the maneuverability of aircraft at high angles of attack. These research efforts led to revolutionary technological leaps in design tools and to increased confidence resulting from actually flying experimental aircraft at high angles of attack or under supersonic cruise conditions. Thrust vectoring research also continued at Dryden with the Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability X-31 and the F-15 Advanced Controls Technology for Integrated Vehicles (ACTIVE) research aircraft. This is partially exemplified in designs already implemented in the F-22 Advanced Tactical Fighter and prototypes of the Joint Strike Fighter. Motivated by the tactical advantages of enhanced high angle-of-attack agility and maneuverability, they have used this understanding to design features providing better control and maneuverability in future high performance aircraft that will make them safer to fly. Successful validation of these data has given engineers and aircraft designers a better understanding of aerodynamics, effectiveness of flight controls, and airflow phenomena at high angles of attack. The NASA HATP has produced technical data from actual flight at high angles of attack to validate computer codes (CFD) and wind tunnel research. ![]() Between 19, NASA was the host for conferences every two years dealing with high angle-of-attack research and technology. NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA., managed this High Angle-of-Attack Technology Program (HATP) in partnership with Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, CA Dryden Flight Research Center (a name it regained in 1994) and Lewis Research Center (now Glenn Research Center) Cleveland, OH. When the airflow separates from the surface, this increases the drag and can lead to a stall.)Ībout 1985, NASA began a formal program to explore and understand aircraft flight at high angles of attack, although the agency has always been interested the subject. (In an ideal situation, the airflow would remain attached to the airfoil surface from leading to trailing edge this would reduce the drag that impedes the movement of the airfoil through the atmosphere. This can result in insufficient lift to maintain altitude or control of the aircraft and a corresponding increase in drag a condition known as stall. This can lead to conditions in which the airflow becomes separated over large regions of the lifting surfaces (airfoils). ![]() During maneuvers, pilots often fly at extreme angles of attack with the nose pitched up while the aircraft continues in its original direction. fighter aircraft to design airplanes that will fly safely in portions of the flight envelope that pilots previously had to avoid.Īngle of attack (alpha) is an aeronautical term that describes the angle of an aircraft’s body and wings relative to its actual flight path. Flight research with the HARV increased our understanding of flight at high angles of attack, enabling designers of U.S. This combination of technologies provided carefree handling of a fighter aircraft in a part of the flight regime that was otherwise very dangerous. The aircraft completed 385 research flights and demonstrated stabilized flight at angles of attack between 65 and 70 degrees using thrust vectoring vanes, a research flight control system, and (eventually) forebody strakes (hinged structures on the forward side of the fuselage to provide control by interacting with vortices, generated at high angles of attack, to create side forces). NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, CA, used an F-18 Hornet fighter aircraft as its High Angle-of-Attack (Alpha) Research Vehicle (HARV) in a three-phased flight research project lasting from April 1987 until September 1996.

If you were inviting some of your friends to join you for an epic guys weekend and showing off your new home, what would that look like? From the front door of our office to the trail head of some great hiking at the Stockton Creek Preserve in Mariposa is a five minute drive. If we choose to measure the angle, the final error is proportional to the measurement error. It also provides a way to reveal hidden patterns in invisible layers.Ģ d = p 2 δ p + p The phase moiré effect is the basis for a type of broadband interferometer in x-ray and particle wave applications. This phase moiré effect and the classical moiré effect from opaque lines are two ends of a continuous spectrum in optics, which is called the universal moiré effect. As light shines through two overlaid masks of similar phase patterns, a broad moiré pattern occurs on a screen some distance away. For example, an invisible phase mask is made of a transparent polymer with a wavy thickness profile. The moiré effect also occurs between overlapping transparent objects. The nonlinear interaction of the optical patterns of lines creates a real and visible pattern of roughly parallel dark and light bands, the moiré pattern, superimposed on the lines. The lines could represent fibers in moiré silk, or lines drawn on paper or on a computer screen. The drawing on the upper right shows a moiré pattern. This can be overcome in texture mapping through the use of mipmapping and anisotropic filtering. Moiré patterns are often an artifact of images produced by various digital imaging and computer graphics techniques, for example when scanning a halftone picture or ray tracing a checkered plane (the latter being a special case of aliasing, due to undersampling a fine regular pattern). Pattern formation Line moiré with slow movement of the revealing layer upward Shape moiré Moiré pattern created by overlapping two sets of concentric circles The adjective moiré formed from this verb is in use from at least 1823. In French usage, the noun gave rise to the verb moirer, "to produce a watered textile by weaving or pressing", by the 18th century. It was a loan of the English mohair (attested 1610). In French, the noun moire is in use from the 17th century, for "watered silk". The similar but imperfect spacing of the threads creates a characteristic pattern which remains after the fabric dries. Moire, or "watered textile", is made by pressing two layers of the textile when wet. The term originates from moire ( moiré in its French adjectival form), a type of textile, traditionally made of silk but now also made of cotton or synthetic fiber, with a rippled or "watered" appearance. In physics, its manifestation is wave interference such as that seen in the double-slit experiment and the beat phenomenon in acoustics. They are also sometimes created deliberately – in micrometers they are used to amplify the effects of very small movements. In television and digital photography, a pattern on an object being photographed can interfere with the shape of the light sensors to generate unwanted artifacts. In printing, the printed pattern of dots can interfere with the image. Moiré patterns appear in many situations. For the moiré interference pattern to appear, the two patterns must not be completely identical, but rather displaced, rotated, or have slightly different pitch. ![]() In mathematics, physics, and art, moiré patterns ( UK: / ˈ m w ɑː r eɪ/ MWAR-ay, US: / m w ɑː ˈ r eɪ/ mwar- AY, French: ⓘ) or moiré fringes are large-scale interference patterns that can be produced when a partially opaque ruled pattern with transparent gaps is overlaid on another similar pattern. On the other hand, domesticated land turtles such as box turtles, who are often kept as pets indoors, have a harder time with hibernation. ![]() Sometimes you might be able to spot a snapper or a painted turtle swimming around under the ice. These two breeds of turtle, among many other breeds, will spend the cold months submerged under the ice of frozen ponds and lakes where the water is relatively warmer. Therefore, they have less of a need to hibernate.ĭuring the winter, snapping turtle hibernation and painted turtle hibernation both take place underwater. Or, certain breeds are native to certain areas of the world where climates aren’t so harsh in the wintertime. For instance, some are more tolerant of colder weather than others. With there being so many different breeds of turtles, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some have different hibernation habits that others. Do Different Breeds of Turtles Hibernate Differently? Cloacal respiration is not optimal but, it is enough to give turtles the energy to survive the winter underwater. A turtle is capable of taking in the oxygen from the water through these membranes or tissues and they are able to use it the same way as they might have if they inhaled the air above the water. All living beings who breathe oxygen transport it throughout their body in their blood. Instead, the tissues of this area of their bodies are highly vascular and semipermeable to oxygen molecules specifically. Obviously, turtles cannot inhale oxygen in normal methods while submerged underwater. Turtles are capable of “ cloacal respiration”, which simply put, is having the ability to “breathe from one’s butt”. How do they remain underwater for months at a time without breathing, you might be wondering? This is possible because of the previously mentioned unique characteristic that turtles have. This process usually begins around September so that they can officially hunker down underwater by October. When they sense the winter weather rolling in, turtles begin looking for the ideal place to spend their time hibernating for the next few months. Turtles are one of the very few species that have the unique survival abilities that they do. The unique biological mechanisms that turtles possess that help them to hibernate and survive the cold winters are rather impressive. Leading them to do what they need to do to conserve what little energy they do have while the winter passes. ![]() The drastic drop in temperature during the winter months causes turtles to move slower than ever. This leads them to take certain measures that hundreds of years of evolution and adaptation have prepared them for. The colder their environment gets, the harder it is for turtles to maintain adequate body temperatures. Their bodies do not produce enough energy to keep warm, let alone move at a faster pace. This is the reason why they move notoriously slow. “Ectotherm” is a term that means that the creature is cold-blooded and cannot regulate its own body temperature very easily. In addition to these human-caused factors, it’s believed that introduced predators like rats and pigs may have also contributed to their eventual demise.Īs you move onto learning about the physical characteristics of dodo birds, it’s important to remember just how unique and special these creatures were. As humans settled on Mauritius and cleared land for agriculture and development, dodo birds lost much-needed nesting sites and food sources. While hunting played a significant role in their decline, habitat destruction also played a part. The extinction of dodo birds was caused by several factors. The impact humans can have on ecosystems is often underestimated, but the loss of such a unique species is a stark reminder that we need to take better care of our planet. They have become symbols of extinction causes and serve as reminders of the importance of conservation efforts today. ![]() The cultural significance of dodo birds is undeniable. Unfortunately, this meant that dodos became a popular target for hunters and were soon hunted into extinction. Dutch sailors discovered them in the late 1500s and began to use them as a source of food during their long voyages. This lack of danger, combined with the fact that they were not afraid of humans or other animals, made them an easy target for hunting. The History of Dodo Birdsīack in the day, these flightless creatures had no natural predators on their native island of Mauritius. In this article, we will delve deeper into the history of these fascinating creatures, explore the reasons for their extinction, examine efforts to preserve them, and take a closer look at other extinct species as well. According to the Hollywood Reporter, “there will be additional filming to help craft a conclusion for the series.” For cynics or worried fans, this might sound like bad news, but, when it comes to the legacy of Discovery, this is probably the right time for the show to end on a high note.
